Authorities in Washington are investigating a major security incident that resulted in the death of Nasire Best, a 21-year-old Maryland man who was fatally shot following an exchange of gunfire with the United States Secret Service near the White House.
According to federal officials, the incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House security perimeter. Investigators reported that Best approached a checkpoint carrying a bag before allegedly producing a firearm and opening fire toward Secret Service personnel.
Agents immediately returned fire, striking the suspect during the confrontation. Best was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
